Lead or brass is reliably the only really sparkfree media and is considered to be the standard for milling comps like BP. But lead is softer than the other media and will wear down over time. If one mills a white powder like potassium nitrate with lead media, the powder will come out of the mill gray.

Charcoal alone wears lead media rapidly because the media just falls right through it easily and wears on itself, just as it would in an undercharged mill. SS media doesn't wear to any perceptible degree when milling charcoal or any other pyro chem. The smaller media mills the charcoal to a finer powder.

Musket balls. are 8 for 100. You should fill container 1/3 full of balls for a good mill. and preferably half full. I ve spent more money on balls than I have on the. mill. Casting your own cylindrical media is extremely easy. I had never cast lead. in my life, never even seem it done.

Posted 28 August 2009 12:26 PM. Check the other "Ball Mill Media" threads here. Pure lead is too soft, and you'll get significant wear (and contamination of your BP with Lead). Use an alloy of lead that contains Antimony (preferred) or Tin. I'm pretty sure fishing weights are almost pure Lead.

Mill media can be cleaned by milling some kitty litter to bentonite powder, if soap and water has failed. Lead wheel weights have gone from the UK and lead is now best found from scrapyards as redundant roofing material or redundant water pipe. Though I have and use both, I prefer ceramic media to lead media.

It was milled for six hours. Although neither where clumping to badly the sides of the drum with the nickels where cleaner than the lead ball media drum.
